Electrifying the trucking industry: What does it take to charge a heavy-duty vehicle?

Heavy-duty trucking is the most demanding application for electrification given the long ranges, heavy cargo requirements, and lack of charging infrastructure. However, this has not stopped automotive OEMs, including BYD, Daimler, and Volvo, from developing all-electric models of heavy-duty vehicles, with the Tesla Semi in fact being one of the last models of a Class 8 electric vehicle unveiled in 2017. As preorders and pilots of these vehicles have continued to increase, the question of how to charge them while minimizing costs and maximizing uptime has remained. In this area, Tesla has once again gained attention for its unconventional approach: the Tesla Megacharger.
