When the smart home space was first emerging, users needed different apps, hubs, and platforms to manage all their devices. This drastically lowered the appeal of a "smart home," whose value proposition was really about automation and connectedness – two things that are hard to accomplish with multiple third-party technologies. In 2018, we started to see Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant emerge as the go-to ecosystems for the smart home. Almost every smart home device today either works with these ecosystems or is making plans to integrate with them soon. Ring, a line of connected doorbells with built-in cameras and motion detectors, decided to integrate its product with Alexa a few months before it was acquired by Amazon.
