Siemens employs a novel design process using digital twins to create the next model of its electric aircraft propulsion unit

Siemens, as a megaconglomerate, develops a suite of machinery for different industry verticals, including for a specialized unit within it for electric aviation. The company manufactures different configurations of the power unit that propel electric aircraft. These power units are often constrained by weight and power capacity, which is a constant battle because they need to also carry additional weight capacity with the battery. Under such constraints, discovering unapparent designs to cut weight and increase power without generating additional excess heat is of critical importance. To meet these multiple criteria and integrate the real-time performance data of the power unit, Siemens developed a digital twin to create a design strategy that enabled rapid development and continuous product improvement.
