Utilities adopting artificial intelligence for monitoring and optimization of their own operations: Earlier this year, we analyzed utility venture investments over the past few years, highlighting that internet of energy (IoE), connectivity, and data analytics have been and remain key areas of interest. However, utilities are not only investing in or acquiring technology developers. Both electric and water utilities are partnering, piloting, and adopting digital technologies that leverage data generated by their own processes to increase efficiency, reduce risk, and improve reliability, among other positive consequences of implementing emerging technologies that have proven to deliver value.Below, we provide examples of electric and water utilities using a variety of technologies that are adding value for their regular operations.Electric utilities:Water utilities:New digital tools have been widely adopted across the utility sector; however, this has happened at a faster rate in the energy sector than in water. In our recent report "Flushing out the Value of Internet of Things in the Water Industry," we found that data analytics and predictive maintenance currently unlock two major benefits, cost reduction and improving efficiency; these benefits are highlighted in the above examples for both water and electric utilities. Clients should view these solutions as the early benefits that will unlock future business opportunities, likely to be led through wider deployment of low-cost sensors and analytics.
