Description

A grass-roots revolution is afoot in manufacturing, affecting everything from electronics to automobiles. “Maker” technologies like 3D printing and modular microprocessors started it, but it is new processes and business models that are attracting the attention of corporations like Autodesk and GE, whose FirstBuild collaboration with startup carmaker Local Motors aims to reinvent the process of designing, making, and selling major appliances. Like Just-In-Time a generation ago, the new approach to manufacturing could change the way we plan supply chains and staff factories – favoring smaller, local workshops that can profitably produce not tens of products in units of thousands, but thousands of products in units of tens. The singular and holistic view of technologies and systems applicable to tomorrow’s manufacturing is a focus area of Lux Research’s Strategic Foresight efforts, as they should be for all corporations from diversified industrials, to electronics giants and chemicals & materials manufacturers. In this context, we will describe:
  • the drivers for adoption of new manufacturing models
  • the key companies and concepts that could contribute
  • the future of the space tomorrow’s leaders will prepare for today
