Modern vehicles are incredibly complex devices, containing more than 30,000 parts procured from a complex ecosystem of suppliers. New and emerging vehicle technologies, including self-driving cars and electric vehicles, present challenges for automotive suppliers by requiring both new hardware and software for the vehicle of the future. This report identifies leading innovators across the supply chain, considering the five most important technologies for the passenger vehicle of the future: self-driving cars, zero emission vehicles, connectivity and infotainment systems, flexible business models, and materials and manufacturing. We find three automotive OEMs – Toyota, General Motors, and Ford – are best poised for success, although software and electronics companies – Qualcomm, Google, and Samsung – could be the new entrants that emerge as their key suppliers.
