New pilot program founded by U.S. DOT and FAA to push regulations for commercial drone deployments

May 24, 2018 | Case Study

Until just a few years ago, the U.S. had some of the most stifling regulations in the world regarding commercial drone operation; permissions were granted on a case-by-case basis and required a licensed pilot. However, the U.S. now counts among an increasing number of countries with highly supportive commercial drone regulations and is pursuing programs that will help shape regulations that can support the growth of the commercial drone industry. At the end of 2017, the U.S. DOT and FAA announced the establishment of the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Integration Pilot Program, which would allow state and local governments to establish "innovation zones" to test commercial drone technologies.
