A shared goal among perovskite developers is to either license their technology to incumbents in the photovoltaic industry or become a manufacturer themselves. As no at-scale manufacturing facilities have begun to be built, Skanska's choice to license pervoskite technologies from Saule marks the first attempt to introduce perovskites into the market. Skanska's goal is to develop a building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) product in which the perovskite technology makes up the building's facade – as windows, skylights, or walls. Saule Technologies' perovskite development has been based around an inkjet printing process, one that can be adapted to different substrates and thus a range of construction materials.
