The global trucking industry is facing a serious issue: increasing demand and decreasing driver availability. American Trucking Associations (ATA) published a report in 2017 stating that the industry would be short by as many as 50,000 drivers by the end of the year. The report went on to say that this driver shortage is a problem that will only get worse, increasing to a shortage as bad as 174,000 drivers by 2026. Companies like Embark Technology are looking at removing drivers from truck cabs completely with fully automated vehicle features. Embark began piloting its technology with commercial partners in October 2017, transporting Frigidaire refrigerators 650 miles between El Paso, Texas, and Palm Springs, California.
