Mercedes-Benz's 5G private network adds efficiency and optimizes new car production

June 27, 2019 | Case Study

Daimler's Mercedes-Benz hired Telefónica Deutschland and Ericsson to install a 5G private network in its vehicle assembly Factory 56 in Sindelfingen, Germany. The indoor mobile network covers 20,000 m2, providing gigabit transmission rates and low latency for production of new car lines. The automaker chose a private network to optimize production processes, including data interchange for product tracking on the assembly line and the ability to adapt product assembly changes on short notice based on market requirements. In addition, Mercedes-Benz will use the 5G network capabilities to implement test scenarios for future product lines, enabling it to optimize assembly lines for new designs for what it calls the "automobile of the future."
