Flying in the time of COVID: Is now the time for small electric jets?

March 18, 2020 | Case Study

In late 2019, the electric aircraft developer Eviation was acquired by the Clermont Group, a private investment group based in Singapore that also owns the electric motor startup MagniX. The deal was surprising in the sense that Eviation was not even a five-year-old company at the time of acquisition and had not yet secured the relevant certifications from any civil aviation authority. However, the most-traveled international airline route in the world (in terms of the total number of flights, not the total number of passengers) is between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, with more than 30,000 flights over the course of a year; with a flight distance of approximately 300 km, this route is ripe for electrification.
