Qatar reserves very little fresh water, which could only last two days if an emergency struck. Its scarcity of water has put the country under severe pressure to ensure its food security. It was estimated in 2015 that Qatar owns only 1% of cultivated land and relies on imports for 90% of its food consumption. Additionally, it has suffered a 30% decline in the number of active farms since 2008 amid climate change and urban population growth. Thus, the country has to look at all possible options for water access.
Atmospheric Water Solutions, a Florida-based supplier of state-of-the-art systems for harvesting clean water from the atmosphere held by Aquarius Brands, has shipped and installed two of its products branded as AquaBoy in Qatar, aiming to address the challenges facing the country by reducing its dependence on its limited freshwater resources. Each of its machines is capable of producing up to 300 gallons per day of water suited for both drinking and irrigation, depending on the ambient humidity levels.
