Early-stage coatings startup strategy shapes long-term commercial success

July 30, 2019 | Case Study

Liquid-infused coating companies LiquiGlide and Adaptive Surface Technologies (AST) were founded in 2014 and 2012 based on similar technologies from MIT and Harvard, respectively. Initially, LiquiGlide pursued a strategy of focusing on one application, packaging for viscous materials like food and cosmetics. In contrast, AST pursued a generalist approach, with target applications including anti-icing coatings, heat exchangers, marine paint, packaging, membranes and filters, and optical coatings. To date, LiquiGlide has seen modest small-scale commercial use, while AST has now launched coatings for marine and industrial container applications, the latter developed in partnership with prominent partner Johnson & Johnson.
