3M photocatalytic anti-smog granules for roofing find initial commercial adoption... after a long development process

August 07, 2019 | Case Study

Photocatalytic coatings' key value propositions include air quality improvement, both indoor and outdoor. However, commercial adoption of existing offerings has been limited and slow-growing to date. In 2018, following a nearly 20-year development process, 3M launched a photocatalytic granule material that is incorporated into roofing shingles along with pigment and then turns smog pollutants into soluble nitrate ions that wash away in the rain. One roofing company, Malarkey Roofing Products, immediately committed to using the material in all its roofing shingles.
