Verbio acquires DuPont's cellulosic ethanol plant to convert it into an anaerobic digestion facility

December 27, 2019 | Case Study

Verbio is a German renewable energy company specializing in the production of ethanol, biodiesel, biogas, and fertilizer, with operations in Europe and North America. The company currently operates a nameplate capacity of 470,000 MT for biodiesel, 260,000 MT  for ethanol, and 600,000 MWh for biogas. In the 2018/2019 fiscal year, Verbio's utilization rates for the three products were 102%, 92%, and 118%, respectively. Due to continued production optimization, drop-in feedstock prices, and the increasing price of biodiesel and ethanol, Verbio finished the 2018/2019 fiscal year with €779 million in revenue and turned a €52 million profit after taxes. As part of its expansion strategy into the North American market, Verbio acquired a Canadian biodiesel facility in August 2019 and DuPont's Iowa cellulosic ethanol plant in March 2019.
