UPS expands NGV fleet, highlighting importance of powertrain diversity in fleets

October 15, 2019 | Case Study

UPS is one of the largest logistics and parcel delivery providers, with a fleet of roughly 125,000 road vehicles and nearly 300 airplanes globally. The U.S. company does most of its business in its domestic market, where more than 80% of its packages are delivered – a country that saw emissions from transportation exceed all other industries in recent years. In response to increasing scrutiny over emissions, UPS announced several targets in 2017 related to reducing emissions, including one stating that 25% of all new vehicle sales will come from alternative powertrains, including natural gas, hybrid, battery electric, and fuel cell vehicles. UPS's recent announcement of investing $450 million in 6,000 natural gas vehicles (NGVs) and supporting fueling infrastructure will go a long way toward meeting those targets.
