As part of its Innovation Challenge, the New York Power Authority (NYPA) partnered with zinc-air flow battery developer Zinc8 to install a 100 kW/1 MWh behind-the-meter energy storage system at a demonstration site in Western New York State. This demonstration project aims "to accelerate the commercialization of new flexible resources for the electricity grid – necessary to ensure an affordable and reliable renewable energy supply." With the State of New York targeting zero carbon electricity by 2040 and net-zero carbon emissions economywide by 2050, stationary energy storage to firm renewable electricity generation will play a critical role. Compared to California, New York is behind in energy storage deployments, but it is working to quickly catch up.
