RoboSense has quickly established itself as a leading provider of lidar sensors in the Chinese market, establishing a partnership in 2018 with Alibaba's logistics arm, Cainiao Network. In that partnership, the companies announced that Cainiao's driverless delivery vehicles, known as G Plus, would use RoboSense's MEMS solid-state lidar. MEMS is one implementation of solid-state lidar, and its advantages include a very fine angular resolution and low-cost manufacturability, due to the fact that fewer components are required compared to those required in a mechanical lidar. However, there have traditionally been disadvantages, including lower range and a narrow field-of-view. These have prevented MEMS lidars from seeing wide adoption in the automotive industry.
