Hyperloop has been promised as a low-cost and low-carbon means of transport aimed at replacing carbon-intensive flights for medium-distance transportation, but it remains very early-stage, with Lux estimating that passenger-carrying systems will be commercialized around 2040 at the earliest. Among the various startups focused on commercializing the technology, Lux has viewed the lean consortium-based approach from Hardt much more favorably than other approaches like that of Virgin Hyperloop, which focused on raising capital and conducting economic feasibility studies before proving its technology. However, even with Hardt's approach, there remains a significant funding gap to manage from now until revenue-generating passenger systems are feasible.
