Thin-film batteries have the potential to create new generations of IoT sensors, medical technology, and wearables with tighter design constraints. In order for these smaller devices to pass the prototype stage, battery integration is a large barrier. For example, in the medical field, there are numerous opportunities for small technologies like biosensors that require a battery with a small footprint and integrated design. At the same time, thin-film battery companies are working to make batteries thinner, more flexible, and safer. The vast market opportunities for thin-film batteries remain largely unexplored, while end applications with inventive product designs are dismissed without a viable energy source.
