Will sodium-ion batteries find success in India?

June 26, 2020 | Case Study

India has long expressed an intention to build up battery manufacturing within the country, it but has yet to produce batteries at scale. India lacks domestic lithium and nickel resources, making it dependent on international sources. Additionally, BEVs and grid-scale energy storage, two of the largest industries for batteries, are small markets in India compared to its neighbors. However, the government of India has taken steps to incentivize energy storage and BEVs made in India, which creates an opportunity for developing the battery industry. Li-ion battery manufacturing has a well-developed supply chain and production process that poses a significant barrier to entry for new participants. Alternatives to Li-ion battery production may be the opportunity that brings energy storage production to India.
