Eni integrates solar plus storage with upstream operations to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions

March 26, 2021 | Case Study

Eni is an integrated oil and gas company based in Rome, Italy, with operations in 66 countries in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific, North America, and Latin America. The Italian oil major is involved across the oil and gas value chain, including exploration and production, liquefied natural gas, power generation, refining, and chemical production, and also develops renewable energy projects. In 2019, Eni produced 682.9 million barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) of hydrocarbons, generated 21.6 TWh of fossil fuel-generated electricity, refined 22.74 million tons of oil and biofeedstocks, produced 8.07 tons of petrochemicals, and produced 66.9 GWh of electricity from renewable sources. Eni's operations in 2019 resulted in Scope 1 and 2 emissions of 41.2 million tons and 0.69 million tons, respectively. In February 2021, Eni announced its long-term plans to target net-zero emissions by 2050 compared to 2018 levels. The company's long-term roadmap involves achieving net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions for upstream operations by 2030, net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions across operations by 2040, and net-zero Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 2050. From 505 million tons of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) emissions in 2018, this would result in 360 million tons of CO2e by 2030, 167 million tons of CO2e by 2040, and net zero by 2050.
