The global biofuels industry is set to grow to a nameplate capacity of 60 billion gallons per year in 2025, driven by commercial expansion of advanced biofuel projects. Hydrotreatment technology for producing drop-in fuels is now commercially viable, with capacity to grow beyond 4 billion gallons per year by 2025. Hydrotreatment requires a significant amount of hydrogen for producing drop-in fuels and this hydrogen typically comes from natural gas, which partially offsets the low-carbon footprint of the biofuel. With growing momentum in the hydrogen economy, multiple companies are exploring the use of green hydrogen in biofuels production.
