Yara forges ahead with green ammonia by announcing full-scale project in Norway

April 14, 2021 | Case Study

Yara is a fertilizer producer based in Oslo, Norway, with international operations in more than 60 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia-Pacific, and North and South America. In 2019, the company produced 3.05 million tons of ammonia, nitrates, and nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers, resulting in Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions of 17.1 million tons, 1.4 million tons, and 55.7 million tons of CO2 equivalent, respectively. Yara has pledged to become carbon neutral by 2050, and in December 2020, it announced its commitment to establishing science-based net-zero emission targets that align with the Paris Agreement's long-term goal of limiting the increase in global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels. The fertilizer producer is aiming to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 30% by 2030, but it has not set long-term targets for reducing Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 2050.
