Who benefits from vehicle-to-building optimization? Grid Edge investigates value for Marubeni

March 29, 2022 | Case Study

Vehicle-to-building (V2B) services enable behind-the-meter load optimization between electric vehicle (EV) chargers and building energy management systems (BEMS). But what are the commercial benefits of the solution? To determine the benefits for Marubeni's automotive business, BEMS developer Grid Edge led a proof of concept (PoC) project in the U.K. The project involved vehicle-to-grid and V2B scenario testing, including optimization of on-site photovoltaic (PV) generation and EV charging. The goal of the project was to better understand the behavior of on-site energy demand and the ability to deploy creative tariffs, while managing connection load constraints. The project was set to provide a year's worth of data for use by the participants. Grid Edge's objective for the PoC was to prove the technical capability and business value of its platform, while Marubeni participated to learn whether there is commercial value for its business in V2B.
