Saint-Gobain plans to invest CAD 4 million in a large heat exchanger. It will be installed on an industrial dryer at its gypsum board plant in Vancouver, Canada. During the manufacturing process, gypsum board must be dried before use — the heat exchanger will recover a certain amount of this heat for reuse in the process.
Saint-Gobain claims that this heat recovery project will reduce CO2 emissions by 10% and increase the overall energy efficiency of the plant, though by how much is undisclosed. The plant is operated by CertainTeed, Saint-Gobain's North American subsidiary that manufactures building materials; the CleanBC Industry Fund will also be investing CAD 1.4 million.
