Saule Technologies dreams of a world filled with thin-film perovskites, but can this dream become reality?

June 02, 2022 | Case Study

The buzz around perovskites has grown rapidly ever since the crystals emerged in the solar industry during the mid-2010s, with efficiencies of lab-scale tandems using perovskites already crossing the efficiency mark of commercially available solar cells. One major reason why perovskites have attracted so much attention is their versatility: They can be optically tuned to produce power from different parts of the solar spectrum, making them excellent candidates for tandems. They can also be produced as flexible thin-film solar cells via roll-to-roll techniques that can serve purposes other than rooftop or utility-scale power generation. A lot of effort has gone into the commercialization of perovskite tandem cells, either in conjunction with crystalline silicon (e.g., Oxford PV) or other technologies (MiaSolé fabricated a perovskite-CIGS [copper indium gallium selenide] tandem with record efficiency), because this can help solar cell manufacturers quote higher efficiencies and annual yields. Polish perovskite developer Saule Technologies, on the other hand, is focusing on thin-film perovskites and reached an agreement on March 30, 2022, with Polish energy company Columbus Energy and smart home designer Somfy to explore new possibilities with its technology.
