Nio's battery swapping network: An advantage for introducing a novel battery technology?

August 09, 2022 | Case Study

The automotive industry is at the center of the energy transition due to innovations in energy storage technologies that have enabled electric vehicles. Li-ion batteries with liquid electrolytes currently dominate the market, but safety concerns and anxiety over range are pushing the industry to look for improvements. Solid-state batteries are one possible solution that could provide higher energy density, longer lifespan, increased safety in a smaller size, and are nonflammable. However, we are still 5 to 10 years away before solid-state batteries are likely to be commercialized at scale. Despite this expected timeline, Nio recently trumpeted its January 9, 2021, announcement of its plans to release a semisolid battery this year.
