Nitrogen (N)-fixing bacteria are a good strategy to meet the demand for low-cost, sustainable nitrogen for crop production. Biofertilizers contain living microorganisms that, when applied to seeds, plant surfaces, or soil, promote growth by increasing the supply or availability of macro- and micronutrients and are an emerging strategy to meet sustainable nutrient demand. Among biofertilizer solutions, N-fixing bacteria are driving the most momentum, but key players now seek to diversify their product offerings to stay ahead of competitors. Pivot Bio is among the leaders in biofertilizer solutions and recently announced a new on-seed nitrogen product for cereals. Pivot Bio's product is based on γ-proteobacterium (KV137) as it has mutated the gene to ensure the microbes fix nitrogen even when it's abundantly available in the surroundings. The new product lines branded PROVEN On-Seed and RETURN On-Seed target corn, sorghum, and spring wheat in North America and will be available for the 2023 growing season.
