Danimer Scientific enters the coating market supported by the right partnership

Despite being around for decades, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) have yet to gain substantial market traction. Bridging the materials-product gap has been one important reason. However, an appealing application that has emerged in recent years is coatings, given their inherent biodegradability and good liquid barrier properties. PHA coating solutions are especially attractive for enabling the recyclability or compostability of pulp and paper packaging. On this front, one of the more promising developments is the exclusive partnership between PHA-veteran Danimer Scientific and Kemira, announced in May 2022. The partners are now on a mission to develop and commercialize PHA aqueous barrier coatings for paper and board products in the food and beverage sector.
