The U.S. Department of State has announced that its Bureau of Cyberspace and Digital Policy (CDP) began operations in April 2022. The CDP comprises three policy groups: International Cybersecurity, International Information and Communications Policy, and Digital Freedom. The groups aim to address security and information freedom on the internet while looking to promote and protect U.S. interests. NEWS European Commission proposes blanket ban on over 12,000 chemicals of concern by 2030 May 4, 2022
The European Commission released a "Restriction Roadmap," a political commitment to ban most toxic chemicals, as part of the zero-pollution goal in the EU Green Deal. Specifically, the ban aims to outlaw all flame retardants, bisphenols, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and all polyvinyl chloride chemicals. In the last few years, some EU countries have formally announced the intention to submit a restriction proposal for PFAS, and this blanket ban represents a rapid first step in the EU chemical strategy. Certain industries have already raised strong opposition and tried to water down early drafts of the plan, as the ban will affect over 12,000 chemicals present in 74% of consumer and professional products. If implemented, the ban will be the largest regulatory removal of authorized chemicals.
NEWS U.S. FDA rejects proposal to exclude tagatose from added sugar labeling May 23, 2022
The U.S. FDA issued a denial in response to Bonumose's petition to exclude tagatose from "added sugars" on the U.S. Nutrition Facts panel. FDA issued an approval to exclude the rare sugar, allulose, in 2019. The agency's response letter indicated that the reason for denial was tagatose's higher caloric content compared with allulose. Bonumose issued a press release slamming the ruling as unfair and illogical as well as citing evidence of "FDA bias against health-focused innovation." This is certainly a blow to Bonumose and the likelihood that tagatose will become a widespread sugar reduction solution. It may boost demand for allulose and dash the hopes of producers of other sugar replacers, such as isomaltulose, which were hoping for exemptions.
