Lidar company Blackmore to be acquired by autonomous vehicle software provider Aurora

It makes sense that OEM-owned players like GM's Cruise and Ford's Argo AI would acquire lidar companies (Strobe and Princeton Lightwave, respectively), but Aurora is a software-focused provider. Although Blackmore has some technical differentiation, this move is also about shrinking Aurora's problem set. By limiting the amount of hardware that Aurora's product interacts with, it can accelerate its own development. With Waymo also using its own lidar, it appears that the direct software integration of sensors is just as important for AV development as the actual capabilities of the sensor. Clients evaluating AV companies that claim to be hardware-agnostic should press companies on the true difficulty of integrating different sensor stacks.
