Chinese bus manufacturers tap Toyota for fuel cell technology

Per the agreement, Toyota will supply fuel cell components to FAW and Higer Bus via Re-Fire Technology, a local supplier. Toyota stated that this is part of a larger strategy to drive the adoption of fuel cell vehicle (FCV) technology, which has stalled in the past decade with the proliferation of electric vehicles. China is quickly emerging as a top destination for FCV commercialization, as the country plans to add 14,600 FCVs by 2020 and develop the necessary fueling infrastructure to support them. Earlier this year, China and South Korea agreed on engaging in joint technology discussions on FCVs, but no commercial deals resulted. The initial focus on buses will be crucial for early success, as passenger FCVs still face an uphill battle.
