The new design eliminates labels wrapped around bottles; the label is the hardest component to recycle due to its flexibility and multimaterial formation. However, the process of engraving content onto the plastic is difficult and expensive. For now, Evian can only use it for bottles that don't require a bar code, limiting its use. Clever design and sustainable solutions like these offer the same performance as the incumbent multimaterial packaging but can only be used for higher-end products. Materials companies and brand owners need to continue working to reduce the cost of these sustainable solutions to move toward wider adoption.
