With the gloomy solar venture capital (VC) funding for startups, it is time for large corporations to partner with academic and government research institutions to access the photovoltaic (PV) innovation landscape. In this report, we explore innovation taking place in research labs across the globe in five technology families, including crystalline silicon (x-Si), copper indium gallium (di)selenide (CIGS) alternatives, heavy metals, III-V, and organic photovoltaics and dye-sensitized solar cells (OPV/DSSC). We use analytical tools to compare disruptive technologies relative to the $1/W system price target and sort them for their commercial feasibility, technology potential, and expected market share by 2030.
