Construction will play a significant role in helping the planet cope with two defining megatrends of the 21st century – aging populations and climate change. In G-20 countries, senior housing construction will grow from a $57 billion market in 2013 to $127 billion in 2023. Advances in connectivity, modular construction, and innovative interior materials will enable the transition from assisted living to aging-in-place. In the top 50 cities most affected by sea level rise, the market for new sea wall construction will rise from $4 billion in 2013 to $9 billion in 2023. Advances in materials science will enable the transition of sea walls from today’s sandstone and timber to tomorrow’s advanced admixtures and geosynthetic materials.
