The transdermal patch as drug delivery vehicle has long promised convenient, low-cost, controlled drug delivery, yet after three decades remains relegated to small niche markets. However, continued investments in patch technology, convergence with other platform-enhancing technologies, shifting demographics, and the need for new drug intellectual property strategy are all strong drivers that together bode well for a renaissance in patch use. In this report we detail the history, challenges, new potential technologies, and opportunities for the new generation of transdermal drug delivery systems.
