Traditional activated sludge treatment in the U.S. burns 68,000 MWh of energy and produces 2.8 million metric tons of toxic waste sludge per day. Existing facilities face pressure from growing populations and increasingly severe storm events to increase the capacity of their systems, and need to address the energy and sludge issues to keep costs from ballooning out of control. A new crop of secondary treatment technologies has appeared on the scene to offer plant operators a way out of this sludgy situation.
