Identifying Wearable Start-ups Ripe for Successful Partnership

As Fitbit and Pebble have demonstrated, start-ups are a critical part of the wearables ecosystem, but it is difficult to filter through the hype of each company and determine which will become the next success story. At Lux, we have an established and quantitative framework for determining which factors predict future success: a company’s partnerships, barriers to growth, management team, momentum, and Lux Take. As start-ups that stand out on all of these metrics are likely to be successful on their own, companies that score favorably on some metrics but negatively on others are more interesting for partnership – if engagement with a client can bring up the missing pieces, they have a much higher probability for success. In this report, we identify the nine wearable companies that are not yet success stories but make good partnership candidates from the companies we profiled in 2015, and analyze how clients can profit from fixing these companies’ current limitations.
