Connecting the Dots – Determining the Winner in Low-Power Wide-Area Networks

Three networking standards – Sigfox, LoRaWAN, and NB-IoT – have emerged to capture the low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) market. NB-IoT will likely win in terms of adoption, due to coverage and reliability, while LoRaWAN is likely to complement NB-IoT in niche cases; 5G is unlikely to disrupt the LPWAN space until at least 2028. However, NB-IoT is still in its nascent phase, with pilots just beginning – industry participants looking for LPWAN coverage today will have to work with the other LPWAN systems, but should look out for network operators that are on top of the latest market developments, or consider deploying private networks.
