Evaluating Strategies in Next-Generation Batteries - Who Is Leading the Innovation Race, and How

As next-generation batteries rise in OEM interest – Bosch, Toyota, VW and others are eyeing the technology for future vehicles – there has been a dramatic uptick in innovation and resulting patent protection in this area. We find that patent activity for solid-state batteries and lithium-sulfur batteries reached an all-time peak in 2016, with Toyota Motor, Sion Power, and PolyPlus being particularly well positioned. Strategies for which chemistry to bet on varies dramatically by OEM, and some are woefully behind – but are hoping that strong partnerships can help give them a way in.
