Automotive OEMs are investing billions of dollars into electrification programs, aiming to bring electric vehicles out of a small niche into the hands of many consumers – but still face concerns over range anxiety. Fast-charging infrastructure, which quickly adds range through high-powered DC chargers, can alleviate some of those concerns and enable long-distance driving. However, this infrastructure is costly both to install and to operate, and still falls short of charge times that rival conventional refueling. This report quantifies the scale of investment required to enable widespread fast-charging infrastructure, identifies a pathway to faster 350 kW charging speeds, and discusses who is best positioned to own and operate stations.
