Mobility Strategies: Long-range advanced transit (hyperloops, airships, and electric and supersonic planes)

October 4, 2017 | State of the Market Report

Four new long-range advanced transportation modes are in prototype testing: Hyperloops (very high-speed trains in tubes between city pairs), Airships (blimps and other lighter-than-air vessels capable of flying tons of cargo to remote sites), Electric airplanes (small planes that use electric propulsion for regional trips), and supersonic airplanes (small passenger planes that travel twice as fast as current commercial jets). Their developers hope to be in market by the early 2020s, but to even be certified for service they first need to solve unmet technology needs in guidance, materials, and power – especially battery advances.
