With recent announcements for increased usage of sustainable materials, consumer-facing companies are driving interest in new, scalable sustainable materials. However, development has historically been difficult, with commercialization relegated to niche markets because of high material costs, poor performance, and low capacities. In this report, we identify three emerging trends for sustainable materials innovation: waste feedstocks, performance as sustainability, and digital enablement. For each of these trends, the following slides spell out their environmental sustainability and economic value and highlight key opportunities.
