Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are the future of the passenger vehicle, but there’s still an open question about how much lightweighting will be necessary in the future. In this report we look to the future to understand the effectiveness of vehicle lightweighting as battery technology evolves to 2030. We find that while there’s still an opportunity for BEV lightweighting to be more cost effective than battery pack size increases as a way to increase range, the growth of BEVs will shift the automotive industry’s priorities away from lightweighting. Material companies need to find solutions that save weight and cost to find adoption in the future.
