Investors, utilities, and start-up companies are developing and adopting a dizzying array of new technologies to attack the high-priced periods of peak electricity demand, including demand response, solar generation, and energy storage for peak shifting. Though all will have some role in displacing the incumbent technology – natural gas-fired power plants – high costs, low capacity factors and technology immaturity mean that natural gas will continue to dominate peak electricity production capacity for years to come.
