Advanced anodes for Li-ion batteries offering 10 times higher theoretical capacity than incumbent graphite, although significant technical barriers resulting in limited cycle life have thus far prevented mass production.

Pure silicon anodes are unlikely to find success outside niche high-performance applications due to high manufacturing costs and poor cycle life. Lower-cost but lower-performance silicon composites will continue to be used in EVs, but with silicon content increasing slowly – likely no more than 2% to 3% each year.
