Silicon Anodes

Advanced anodes for Li-ion batteries offering 10 times higher theoretical capacity than incumbent graphite, although significant technical barriers have prevented technology developers from accessing this potential for mass-produced cells.

Lux logo LUX TAKE:

Pure silicon anodes are unlikely to find success outside niche high-performance applications due to high manufacturing costs and poor cycle life. Lower-cost but lower-performance silicon composites will continue to be used in EVs, but with silicon content increasing slowly – likely no more than 2% to 3% annually.
